About the breed

German Shepherds at a glance

German Shepherds are a medium-large breed: males usually stand 24–26″ and weigh 75–90 lb, females 22–24″ and 55–70 lb. They have a dense double coat that sheds all year and heavily each spring and fall, and they reach full height by 12–18 months but keep filling out until about two or three.

They make wonderful family dogs when they’re socialized early and given daily exercise, training and time with their people. A Shepherd that’s bored or alone too much will find its own jobs — so they’re happiest with an active family that enjoys training.
